FH Aachen Nowum Energy
The NOWUM-Energy Institute of Aachen University of Applied Sciences, located in Jülich, has been committed to the successful implementation of energy transition to renewable energies since 1998. For achieving this, two working groups are addressing the topics of sustainable energy systems as well as bioenergy and bioresource management. They focus on application-oriented research, e.g. in the areas of biogas production with a focus on alternative substrates and fermentation product processing, biological methanisation and water treatment for cirquit closure.
As part of the PHOENIX project, the NOWUM-Energy Institute is investigating the use of regional industrial biogenic residues and waste materials as well as plants from marginal soils as potential substrates for biogas production. The produced biogas is processed, analysed and delivered to the IET-I of the FZJ for further experimental usage like high-temperature electrolysis. In order to produce a sufficient amount of gas, a container-based biogas plant is being set up and operated as part of the project at the Jülich campus of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences.
The fermentation product formed during biogas production is then to be processed to recover not only nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphate, but also to purify wastewater so that it can be reused in the process and to close the resource cycle.
