Institute of Technical Thermodynamics (LTT)
The Institute of Technical Thermodynamics (LTT) at RWTH Aachen University develops and applies methods for the analysis, design, and optimization of energy systems, as well as for the comprehensive energetic, economic and environmental assessment of industrial production processes. By tightly integrating mathematical optimization with life cycle assessment, the LTT has developed strong methodological competences in the systematic evaluation and design of complex energy and process systems. On this basis, energy systems and industrial processes are designed and improved to meet high requirements in terms of reliability, efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability.
Within PHOENIX, the LTT, together with the ICE-2 of Forschungszentrum Jülich, is responsible for the potential analysis and multidimensional assessment of selected Power-to-X (P2X) value chains. A central focus of LTTs work is the life cycle assessment (LCA) of specific P2X applications. In addition, the LTT analyzes the large-scale deployment of P2X technologies in the Rhenish mining region in long-term transformation pathways. The objective is to integrate both systematic approaches into a comprehensive, integrated assessment of the considered P2X applications.
