Institute of Climate and Energy Systems - Jülich Systems Analysis (ICE-2)
The research focus of the Institute of Climate and Energy Systems - Jülich Systems Analysis (ICE-2) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich is the unbiased, scientific investigation of technologies, technology paths, value chains and market ramp-ups for the transformation into sustainable energy systems. ICE-2 investigates and develops innovative methods and tools for a holistic assessment of new technologies and circular concepts. To reflect the transformation success, methods for (prospective) Life Cycle Sustainability Assessments (LCSA) are continuously further developed and deployed. In addition to minimizing environmental effects and waste streams as well as maximizing resource efficiency, social impacts and economic implications are also analysed. In particular, hydrogen technologies, power-to-X systems, CO2 avoidance and utilization technologies as well as strategies for the use of biogenic residues have been the focus of the work to date. Addresses are besides science, decision-makers from politics, industry, and social actors.
ICE-2 coordinates the technology assessment of the new, industry and sector coupling power-to-X value chains developed within the PHOENIX project. Using a bottom-up life cycle approach, environmental, economic and social implications are assessed. Macro-economic implications are addressed using economic Input-Output models. Combining both perspectives allows for a holistic potential analysis as a basis for strategic planning at different system levels.
