Energy Transition and Structural Transformation

In the context of industrial transformation processes related to the energy transition and the phase-out of lignite-fired power generation, Power-to-X is a vital technological solution for achieving a sustainable post-mining landscape.

The Rhineland's transition from coal to a sustainable industrial future requires energy-intensive industries to adopt low-emission, fossil-independent solutions. Project PHOENIX, funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space, is accelerating this transformation by advancing, demonstrating, and implementing promising Power-to-X technologies. PHOENIX focuses on sustainable fuels, chemicals, heat, and gases from renewable electricity and CO₂ from biogenic sources or unavoidable industrial emissions, thereby unlocking new circular value chains. This enables the region to secure existing jobs, create future-proof employment opportunities, and reduce its dependence on fossil fuel imports. Power-to-X enables CO₂-neutral industrial processes through renewable energy and regenerative resources, making it the key technology for sector coupling and a circular carbon economy. As a central driver of industrial transformation, Power-to-X is pivotal in shaping a sustainable post-mining landscape. The project aims to establish Power-to-X as a cornerstone of a demonstrator region, positioning the Rhineland as a global leader in sustainable industrial production and driving innovation, regional development, and climate-neutral growth.
